Question 1

Do you work with architects and interior designers, or directly with clients?

Accepted Answer

Both. Most projects come to me through an architect, interior designer or brand team; on smaller residential and retail jobs I work directly with the owner. Either way I coordinate with the M&E engineer and the electrical contractor so the lighting is built as drawn.

Question 2

What stages does a lighting design project go through?

Accepted Answer

Professional lighting design follows four stages aligned with RIBA work stages: Stage 1 (Concept) establishes the design intent and lighting strategy. Stage 2 (Developed) refines luminaire selections and preliminary calculations. Stage 3 (Technical) produces detailed Dialux simulations, specifications, and compliance documentation. Stage 4 (Construction) provides site support, commissioning, and as-built records.

Question 3

What software do you use for lighting calculations?

Accepted Answer

Dialux Evo for calculations and renders, with DWG layouts for reflected ceiling plans and coordination. Manufacturers’ IES and LDT photometric files are checked with the free tools further down this page before they go anywhere near a model.

Question 4

Do I need a lighting consultant for building regulations compliance?

Accepted Answer

While not always mandatory, a lighting consultant helps ensure your project meets Part L energy efficiency requirements, emergency lighting standards (BS 5266), and other building regulations. Professional lighting calculations are often required for planning applications and building control approval, particularly for commercial and larger residential projects.

Question 5

Do you sell or supply luminaires?

Accepted Answer

No. NR Lighting is an independent design consultancy. Luminaires are specified on photometric performance, colour quality, glare control, efficacy and buildability, with equal-and-approved criteria so the contractor can propose alternatives that are judged on the same basis.
